DURBAN - The Provincial Organised Crime Unit has intercepted R400 000 worth of heroin which is believed to be ready for packing and distribution in the Durban Metro area.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the unit had received information about drugs that were being kept in a building on Anton Lembede Street.

“The team proceeded to the identified apartment where they found 2.1 million empty capsules sealed in clear plastic bags and heroin powder. The capsules were destined for packing and distribution of heroin in the Durban Metro area,” Gwala said.

“The recovered drugs have an estimated value of R400 000. The police are still searching for the suspects.”

Earlier this month, two men appeared in court for drug possession and drug dealing.

Police had conducted a sting operation in the Durban Central area when they received information on drugs that were being transported. Whilst in Gresham place in the North Beach area an e-hailing vehicle with two occupants was intercepted and searched, 4 300 blue and white capsules of heroin, 4 000 empty capsules, seven large plastic packets of pure heroin weighing 100 grams each and 20 'boss' mandrax tablets were seized from the suspects. The recovered drugs have an estimated street value of R131 000.

A week before, police arrested a man who was found in possession of three plastic containers containing heroin paste, three glass bottles of heroin paste, 11 stones of heroin, 30 syringes and alcohol swabs. The recovered drugs are valued at R120 000.

Gwala also spoke about the SAPS’ readiness for the festive period saying disruptive operations were still on-going and the community in the province should expect more police visibility.

She said the operation was part of the province’s Safer Festive Season Operations in Durban and surrounding areas.
