DURBAN - The eThekwini Municipality has encouraged residents to participate in electing new ward committee members in the upcoming elections.

This comes after the municipality adopted the report tabled at a Full Council sitting on February 28.

Ward committees serve as advisory bodies without any executive powers. It is an independent representative structure that functions impartially.

eThekwini speaker, councillor Thabani Nyawose, said ward committees are instrumental to achieving the objectives of local government.

“Ward committees are an important communication link between residents, ward councillors and the municipality. They play an advisory role that can make recommendations to council," he said.

The following portfolios shall be reflected in ward committees: Cleansing and Solid Waste, Electricity, Water and Sanitation, Entrepreneurship and Small Business, Health, Safety and Security, Human Settlement, Skills Development and Job Creation, Sports, Recreation and Culture, Transport, Roads and Stormwater, Youth and Gender and Vulnerable Group.

The municipality’s 111 wards will each hold their elections for a new ward committee for 2022 to 2026 between March 13 and 20, 2022.

The process for each of the election days will have registration and verification from the voter’s roll, opening and explanation of the election process by a presiding officer, including a nomination and voting process.

The votes will be counted and followed by the announcement of results and closure.

Residents are advised to contact their respective ward councillors for more details.
