DURBAN - The Ulundi Regional Court sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape after they found him guilty.

Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “The accused appeared in court on March 14, 2022, for a rape incident that took place on September 2, 2017, at Ngilazi Reserve in Mahlabathini where a 31-year-old mentally disabled relative was raped.”

She said a rape case was opened at Mahlabathini police station and the docket was transferred to Ulundi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

“The accused was arrested and made several court appearances. Compelling evidence against the accused resulted in the court's decision to give him the maximum sentence. The court declared that he is a danger to the community and found this crime gruesome as the accused knew of the victim's mental condition,” Gwala said.

“The detectives were pleased with how the family stood its ground when the accused’s relatives attempted to pay them off for his dirty deeds. The family was delighted with the court results,” Gwala said.
