Durban - More rain is expected to fall in parts of KwaZulu-Natal after a significant amount of rain fell on Saturday in the coastal parts of the province.
South African Weather Service forecaster Wisani Maluleke said that a lot of rain had fallen in KZN on Saturday, especially in the coastal parts of the province.
“We received a lot of rain along our coastal areas of KZN,” Maluleke said.
A few stations that received rainfall:
- Durban - 58mm
- Margate - 42mm
- Fezela - 67.8mm
- Port Edward - 62.6mm
- Virginia - 30mm
- Mtunzini - 16.6mm
- Mandeni - 16.8mm
- Babanango - 32.6mm
- Pietermaritzburg - 24mm
- Giants Castle - 35.6mm
- Royal Natal - 37mm
He said other stations did receive rainfall, between 14mm to 18mm.
Maluleke actual figures for Sunday’s rainfall will be available on Monday morning.
“We’re expecting the rain to continue tomorrow (Monday), although there is a sign it will start clearing from the south but we are still expecting a lot of rain tomorrow (Monday) because the clearing will start in the evening,” Maluleke said.
“Then by Tuesday, we might get some light rain along our coastal areas. On Tuesday is when we will start seeing the system moving out of the country and the rain clearing completely.”
Regarding temperatures warming up again, Maluleke explained that since there was a movement towards the winter months, most of the weather systems that will come through are winter systems where temperatures are expected to drop.
“But from Tuesday, we will start seeing the temperatures warming up,” Maluleke said.
With South Africans awaiting the season’s first snowfall this weekend, Maluleke said for the weather service to be able to see snowfall, they used a satellite but if it was cloudy, it was not easy to see whether snow had fallen but normally, they would get people on the ground reporting snowfall in the Drakensberg.
“So far we have not received anything in terms of reports,” Maluleke said.
He said maybe snow fell over the highest peaks.
“We were not expecting a lot of snow, we were expecting only slight snow. It could be that even if it had fallen, it's not a lot of snow.”
On Sunday, Snow Report SA reported that there was snowfall at AfriSki Mountain Resort in Lesotho.
It said big snowflakes were falling in the afternoon at AfriSki.
