DURBAN - An alleged drug dealer was killed on Thursday morning while fleeing from the police.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said police officers from the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit had watched a transaction between two men at Kings Park after receiving information with regards to drug dealing.

“As the police officers approached the men, one of them sped off in his vehicle. A chase ensued towards Morningside, and at the corner of Norwood and Trematon Drive, the suspect collided with another vehicle. The man believed to be in his thirties died at the scene, and the other motorist was transported to hospital for medical attention,” Naicker said.

“A search conducted inside the suspect’s vehicle uncovered drugs such as methcathinone and cocaine valued at R5 000. The team also seized cash of R1 640, which is suspected to be the proceeds of the drug trade.”

Naicker said police opened a docket for drug possession and culpable homicide for further investigation.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said Emer-G-Med paramedics arrived on the scene and found the two vehicles had collided at high impact. The driver of one of the vehicles was found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the arrival of paramedics.

Van Reenen said the occupant of the second vehicle, a man of approximately 40 years of age, was found entrapped in the wreckage of his vehicle, and the jaws of life were used to cut him free, while advanced life support interventions were performed to stabilise him. Once stabilised, he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.

“Reports from the scene indicate the deceased driver was allegedly fleeing from the South African Police Services, who were attempting to stop his vehicle when he lost control and crashed into oncoming traffic,” Van Reenen said.

Meanwhile, police have seized various drugs worth more than half a million rand in the Point area in Durban on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the team acted on information about drugs being kept at an abandoned building on Smith Street. An operation was put in place, and it led to the recovery of 267 ecstasy tablets, 38 plastic packets of cocaine powder, 83 mandrax tablets, 10 pieces of rock cocaine and other various drugs.

The drugs were recovered inside the ceiling boards on the roofing of the building. The recovered drugs are valued at R543 000.
