DURBAN - POLICE and private security personnel have recovered three brand new Mercedes-Benz trucks and a Mercedes-Benz Vito after they were stolen from a business premises in Riverhorse Valley, north of Durban, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said Greenwood Park police were investigating a case of robbery after four unknown suspects armed with firearms entered Hippo Park in Riverhorse Valley around 2.20am on Monday and demanded truck keys.

“They held and assaulted the security guards. The suspects took several keys and fled the scene with three trucks and a Mercedes-Benz Vito. Two trucks were recovered in the Umkomaas area,” Gwala said.

ET Rapid Response managing director Tony Lokker said they had received information from a member from Fidelity that three brand new Mercedes-Benz trucks and a Mercedes-Benz Vito van were taken in a business robbery in the early hours of the morning in Durban North.

He said information of possible whereabouts of the trucks and van were relayed and members were mobilised.

Lokker said the first truck was recovered abandoned on the N2 freeway in the Doonside area, south of Durban, by the metro police K9 unit and SAPS.

The second and third trucks were also recovered abandoned in the Umnini area and Adams Mission areas, respectively, by the ET Rapid Response tactical response team (TRT) and police.

Lokker said: “Mercedes-Benz Vito was recovered by PT Alarms, and Tracker Connect, whereby our TRT and SAPS responded to assist in the search of a suspect who was seen fleeing from the vehicle, but unfortunately the suspect could not be located.”

Last Thursday private security personnel and police arrested three men linked to a vehicle theft syndicate in the Bluff area, south of Durban.

The role players involved were ET Rapid Response, Bluff Community Policing Forum, Brighton Beach police and the eThekwini metro police street crime unit and south crime prevention.

The team was looking for a Toyota Hilux spotted in the Bluff, and sought by SAPS on a vehicle crime investigation units inquiry.

The vehicle was located along Foreshore Drive, Brighton Beach.

The occupants and the vehicle were searched and officers found: “An illegal hand-held radio, fully programmed with SAPS channels, car-breaking implements, a second set of licence plates not matching the vehicle, objects used for the theft of motor vehicles such as various computer boxes, ignitions, ignition keys, OBD readers etcetera,” Lokker said.
