DURBAN - Three suspects have been charged with possession and dealing in drugs in Durban, with an estimated street value of R100 000.

The arrest was as a result of the SAPS Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit’s disruptive festive season operations in Durban and the surrounding areas.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “The team proceeded to Smith Street and Rutherford Street in Point where three suspects aged between 34 and 50 were arrested after they were found with various drugs such as crystal meth and heroin.”

Gwala added that the recovered drugs have an estimated street value of R100 000.

She said the suspects had recently made their first appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

They are charged with dealing and possession of drugs.

In another incident, Gwala said: “The team conducted a sting operation in the building situated on Prince Street in Point. The police recovered 96 plastic bags of methcathinone, 12 plastic wrappings of cocaine powder, nine plastic bags of crystal meth, six large plastic packets of methcathinone and 358 ecstasy tablets.”

She added that the drugs were found abandoned in the building.

Meanwhile, in another recent sting operation by the provincial drug and firearm unit, police recovered drugs with an estimated value of R400 000.

Gwala said police had received information about drugs that were retained in a certain building, and they found 2.1 million empty capsules sealed in clear plastic bags and heroin powder.

The capsules were allegedly destined for packing and distribution of heroin in the Durban Metro area.
