DURBAN – Police arrested a man driving a vehicle wanted for being used in the commission of stolen vehicles.

Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said earlier this week a vehicle wanted for being used in the commission of stolen vehicles was seen leaving the KwaMakhutha area, south of Durban.

Sewpersad said a silver Toyota Etios sedan ND 452-049 was spotted on Moss Kolnick Drive heading east with four occupants and a high-speed chase began through the eManzimtoti suburb during a shoot-out between police and the suspects.

“On the M37 and Iziko Road the vehicle crashed and the suspects fled into the settlement where the driver was apprehended,” Sewpersad said.

“He was arrested for attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and the possession of car breaking implements.”

Sewpersad said the suspect was detained at Amanzimtoti SAPS and the vehicle was taken to the pound for investigation.

Earlier this year Sewpersad called on communities to help them in shutting down car theft and hijacking syndicates in the city.

The call came after Durban police arrested four men, aged between 33 and 49, for being in possession of car-breaking implements in June.

He said the community was reluctant to report what was going on.

“The community also needs to come on board because we cannot fight the scourge without the assistance of the community. The community must give information, factual information as well,” said Sewpersad.

“The only way we can fight crime is to get back to the basics and inform and alert the police, so the police will know that that particular area, for example, Bhekithemba in uMlazi is a hive of activity with all these vehicles that are going in there.”
