Durban – The death toll in the crash on the N3 in Hammarsdale, west of Durban, on Sunday, has risen to six.

Initial reports said five people had died, however another victim died on the way to hospital.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance service spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics responded to reports of a crash on the N3 southbound, near the Cliffdale offramp, in Hammarsdale.

Botha said that when emergency services arrived they found that a vehicle had overturned.

“Paramedics found that three patients had sustained critical injuries, two patients had sustained serious injuries and two patients had sustained minor injuries,” Botha said.

“Sadly five occupants sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived. One patient that was in critical condition deteriorated en route to the hospital and, despite the efforts of advanced life support paramedics, the patient succumbed to their injuries,” Botha said.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Hammarsdale SAPS.

“It is alleged that on June 26, 2022 at 6pm, a vehicle with passengers overturned on N3 freeway south bound Cliffdale. Six passengers were confirmed dead at the scene,” Ngcobo said.

“A 30-year-old driver and three passengers sustained injuries. The vehicle was searched and police found a copper cable. The driver was arrested for drunken driving and possession of stolen property and will appear in court today (Monday).”
