DURBAN - Police have confirmed that an armed robbery took place at the Montblanc shop in Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the incident took place at 9.30am.

“Five males armed with firearms entered the shop and used a hammer to break open glass cases and stole jewellery (watches) and expensive bags. No shots were fired. No one was shot or injured. They escaped near (the) Truworths entry and climbed into a silver Mercedes with registration NP,” Mbele said.

She said a broken hammer was left at the scene.

She also said the value of items taken was unknown as yet.

Following the incident, Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said shots were fired as robbers fled the scene of the robbery.

Balram said several early-morning shoppers contacted the organisation at approximately 9:37am reporting that shots had been fired. One caller informed the controller on duty that one person had been shot.

Reaction officers and the association’s medics were dispatched to the mall and on arrival established that several suspects had robbed the high-end store. Shots were fired as they fled. No injuries were reported. The robbers made their escape in a silver Mercedes-Benz that was spotted travelling south towards Galleria Mall.

Earlier, Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said A26 responded to reports of a shooting incident at a popular shopping destination in the uMhlanga Ridge area just after 9am on Sunday.

“Reports from the scene allege that a number of suspects robbed a jewellery store in the centre, firing shots when they fled the scene,” Van Reenen said.

“No injuries have been reported.”
