DURBAN – A video has emerged of a woman being shot in the Pearls Mall parking lot in uMhlanga, north of Durban.

In the 42-second video clip, a white VW Golf with occupants is seen in the parking lot near the boom gates. A man and a woman stand outside the vehicle. The man is at the driver’s window and the woman is leaning in the back door on the driver’s side. The man moves away from the driver towards the woman and that is when a shot is fired. The woman falls to the ground and the man appears to be asking why a shot was fired while throwing his hands in the air and backing away.

The woman then gets up and runs away towards the boom gates and disappears out of the camera angle.

The driver of the Golf drives off in the direction in which the woman fled.

Also visible in the video is the vehicle of a private security company and what appears to be an SAPS vehicle.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “A 25-year-old suspect was arrested. His firearm was also seized by police. He appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today (Monday).”

Following the incident, police had responded to a report of a shooting at a hotel in uMhlanga at about 1.30am on Sunday. When they arrived a 25-year-old victim had been rushed to hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.

The management of Pearls Mall said it was aware of the shooting.

“It is not clear if those involved were patrons of the mall. The Pearls Mall security immediately called for the assistance of SAPS and the uMhlanga UIP to help in managing the situation and to restore order,” management said.

“The Pearls Mall takes this matter very seriously and took immediate steps to increase its security detail in an effort to manage incidents such as this and to ensure the safety of its patrons.”
