DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a murder and two attempted murder cases in Newlands after three youths were shot allegedly by unknown persons, on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said a count of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Newlands East police station for investigation.

“It is alleged that on (Sunday), three men aged between 19 and 26 were on Seabass Road in Newlands East, when they were shot by unknown people,” Gwala said.

A 20-year-old sustained multiple gunshot wounds on the body and was certified dead at the scene, she said.

The other two victims were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

It is alleged that Samuel Emmanuel Hughes, Lucken Hlenti and Tresegay Barnes, all from Wentworth, were shot by unknown suspects, while visiting Newlands.

Hughes allegedly died at the scene, while the two others were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Wentworth ward councillor Aubrey Synman described the incident as tragic and said the families were devastated by the shooting incident.

“The three young men were involved in soccer and from what I've heard they were good guys,” Snyman said.

He added that the boys had gone for a visit to Newlands.

“My sympathies and condolences go out to the families. The motive for the shooting is still unknown,” he said.

Wentworth chairperson of the Community Policing Forum, Pastor Donovan Anderson, said they were trying to look into the matter to find out what really happened.

“We don’t know what really transpired. We are trying to look into the matter to find out. We will give an update as soon as the information is available,” Pastor Anderson said.
