DURBAN - The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in KwaZulu-Natal has advised its Sassa clients in Phoenix and Verulam that the Phoenix Sassa local office will be closed due to office refurbishment.

Sassa KZN spokesperson Sandy Godlwana said the refurbishment came amid the building having been identified as being unsafe for habitation because of deteriorating infrastructure and bird mites from the nests of pigeons. In order to ensure the safety of clients and employees, it has become imperative that Sassa relocates its equipment and staff to an alternative venue with immediate effect.

Godlwana said in light of that, Sassa erected a marquee in the parking lot of the same premises and will provide services as from Wednesday, March 23, 2022, from 7.30am to 4pm.

“Disability grant assessments will be conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and Osindisweni hospitals. Disability grant applicants will be advised of the venue and date for assessments when they visit the offices to collect a disability grant referral letter,” Godlwana said.

“The refurbishment project is expected to take approximately 24 months.”

KZN acting regional executive manager Simlindile Jabavu said: “We would like to apologise to all our clients for any inconvenience the renovations might cause. This has been a difficult but necessary decision aimed at improving conditions in which we serve our clients. We assure all our clients that, during the renovations the office will be operating at full capacity.”
