DURBAN – A woman shot during a robbery in the north of Durban succumbed to her injuries in a clinic.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said the woman was shot during a robbery on KwaDukuza Road, in Hambanathi, on Sunday night.

Balram said Rusa had received a call for help at 11.17pm on Sunday.

“Reaction officers were informed that a group of individuals were standing on the roadside when three occupants of a white VW Polo accosted them,” Balram said.

“The men were armed with firearms. They robbed a man for his cash. They then asked the deceased to hand over her cellphone when she was shot. The robbers then fled the scene. The critically injured woman was transported privately to a local clinic where she succumbed to her injuries.”

Balram said reaction officers searched for the suspects but made no arrests.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident and said that a 29-year-old woman was shot by unknown people.

“She sustained a gunshot wound on the chest and was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on arrival. The motive for the killing is unknown. A case of murder is being investigated by Tongaat police,” Mbele said.
