Three farm workers died after being struck by lightning near Gingindlovu in the Umlalazi Municipality.

The three – Emmanuel Mansango, 33, Lungile Nyawo, 28, and Khanyisile Mthembu, 40 – were killed during Tuesday night’s thunderstorm that struck the Passenham Farm, near Gingindlovu.

Spokesman for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Vernon Mchunu, said the three had been standing on a veranda when they were struck.

Mchunu said seven other workers were also hit and are recovering at the Eshowe Hospital.

This latest fatal strike comes less than a week after MEC Nomusa Dube launched a “Phepha, Be Disaster Wise” awareness campaign, which aims to reduce disaster-related deaths by half over the next five years as people become more aware of the ways to survive lightning, storms and fires.

The campaign was launched in Bergville last Sunday.

“The incident brings to at least 195 the number of people who have been killed this year in disaster-related incidents,” Mchunu said.
