Man (79) assaulted in Chatsworth jewellery store robbery

Durban - A 79-year-old man was assaulted during an armed robbery in Chatsworth on Monday. According to police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, a gang of armed men entered a business premises and demanded cash and jewellery. 

"The victim was assaulted by suspects who then fled in a blue BMW. At this stage, it is not clear what was taken during the robbery. The windows at two other business premises were damaged. The 79-year-old man is receiving medical treatment in hospital," she said. 

She said Chatsworth police were investigating a case of robbery. 

Meanwhile, a 80-year-old man was shot dead following a shootout with police in Bergville earlier in the day. 

According to police, at around 11am, Bergville police were following up on a shooting at a farm in the area.

KZN SAPS Communications Officer, Brigadier Jay Naicker, said the elderly man had shot another man who came to collect his goats, allegedly confiscated allegedly. 

"The victim was shot in the face and was taken to hospital for further treatment. Police officers and a hostage negotiator approached the 80-year-old man in an effort to arrested him and charge him for attempted murder. The suspect allegedly shot at police who shot back, fatally wounding the man," he said.

Naicker added that the man's firearm was seized following the shootout. 

"A case of attempted murder as well as an inquest was opened for further investigation," Naicker said.
