Rapist who acted concerned about young girl gets 20 years

DURBAN - A 40-year-old rapist has been convicted and sent to jail for an effective 20 years.

Mduduzi Mzolo, the convicted rapist, was convicted for raping a 12-year-old girl in Plessislaer, Pietermaritzburg.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the incident happened in August last year, when Mzolo had seen the little girl being disciplined by her older brother about playing away from home.

“The accused acted as if he was concerned about the incident, he then asked the victim to come with him to the back of the house where he raped her,” said Mbhele.

Mzolo was convicted to 20 years imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle Regional Court sentenced a 27-year-old to life imprisonment for raping his aunt three years ago.

The 27-year-old rapist, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim,  had been raised by the victim.

“During September 2015, the accused accosted his aunt whilst she was sleeping at her home in Mathukuza area, Newcastle. He repeatedly raped her, stabbed her multiple times, strangled her and robbed her of cash before fleeing,” said Mbhele.

The rapist fled the province, leaving his aunt in a critical condition in hospital.

Police discovered the accused in a Gauteng prison in April last year, where he had been held for murder.

He was charged with rape and attempted murder.

“He was taken to Newcastle court to face the full might of law for his heinous deeds. DNA samples also linked him to a murder case that he committed in Fernie area in the Mpumalanga province. The accused was incarcerated for the duration of the trial until his successful prosecution,” said Mbhele.

The criminal was convicted of rape, attempted murder and theft. His case in Mpumalanga is still ongoing.
