Policeman shot in hijacking attempt

Durban - Police have launched a manhunt for a group of men who allegedly shot a police officer during a failed hijacking in Durban at the weekend.

It is alleged that a police officer had been on his driving along Mthongani Road in uMlazi on Sunday evening, when he was stopped by a group of men.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, said the men demanded that the policeman’s car keys.

“He refused to hand over his keys and was shot in the leg. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment. Charges of attempted carjacking and attempted murder were opened at the Umlazi police station for investigation,” Zwane said.

Meanwhile, messages of condolences have been pouring in on social media after a Phoenix policeman suffered a heart attack and died on Sunday night.

The policeman, identified as Warrant Officer Suren Surajpaul, is believed to have suffered chest pains while on duty. He was rushed to hospital where he passed away.
