A famous British rock star is in a critical condition in a Cape Town hospital after cracking his skull.

The lead singer and founding member of Procol Harum, Gary Brooker, 67, was due to have performed with his band at GrandWest last night, with fellow Brits 10cc and the Moody Blues – and then again in Johannesburg on Friday night.

But the shows were cancelled after Brooker fell on Tuesday night.

A spokesman for Big Concerts, John Langford, said Brooker had not been out celebrating his birthday, as reported, but had been in his room at the five-star Table Bay Hotel.

“He is in the ICU of the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital with a serious skull fracture,” Langford said.
