Durban – A suspect is expected to appear in court on Thursday for escaping from lawful custody, possession of stolen property and damage to infrastructure.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said on Tuesday at 8pm, Malvern police arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of stolen property and damage to infrastructure.

“The suspect was found in possession of a copper meter tap, copper fittings and copper pipes valued at R2 000. He was caught on Morrison Road in Queensburgh,” Ngcobo said.

“The next day, a police officer was with the suspect conducting further investigation when the suspect attacked him.”

Ngcobo said the suspect attempted to flee from the community service centre and he ran towards the street.

He was apprehended and was also charged with escaping from lawful custody.

Ngcobo said he was expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

Meanwhile, on Monday, a multidisciplinary task team discovered an illegal scrap metal dealer in Ntuzuma A-Section manufacturing traditional three-legged pots using copper and cables that allegedly belong to eThekwini Metro and Transnet.

Seven men were arrested after being found in possession of copper and cables with an estimated street value of R1.5 million in Ntuzuma, north of Durban.

Also on Monday, Ashlen Govender, Thembinkosi Khumalo and Mohamed James who had been arrested for possession of copper cables and cellphone tower batteries valued at about R1m in the Umhlali policing area, were remanded to August 2 for a formal bail application.

They appeared in court on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and tampering with essential infrastructure.
