Durban - A bystander was killed when he was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight during a robbery at a Cato Manor convenience store on Saturday night.

Zamo Masango, 26, of Chesterville, had gone to the petrol station shop in Booth Road at about 7.45pm to buy bread and use the ATM, a shocked relative said on Sunday.

“I don’t think he knew what was happening,” said his brother-in-law, Stutu Buthelezi. “When he turned away from the ATM and walked towards the cashier he picked up a loaf of bread. He was shot once at the entrance to the shop.”

Metro and Cato Manor police arrested one of the five suspects inside the shop. He had pretended to be a customer but police used CCTV footage to identify him.

A second suspect was arrested in Cato Crest a short while later.

Buthelezi said his family had wanted to prove to police his brother-in-law was not part of the gang. “We made sure that we found his ATM slip in his pocket,” he said. “Who will support his three children from here on?”

Police said three men had entered the shop posing as customers, while two others stood at the doorway. One man held a gun between the folds of a newspaper and demanded money from the cashier, while another man grabbed money from the till.

Security guards arrived as the robbers were leaving. Some fled in a white Toyota Quantum van. Masango was shot as the men were fleeing.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said

: “Two suspects, aged 22 and 24, will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The three other suspects are still at large. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.” - Daily News
