Durban -

Two metro police officers were hurt when they were stoned by angry protesters in Folweni, south of Durban, on Monday.

Metro police spokesman, S’bonelo Mchunu, said the officers were being treated in hospital.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said six people aged between 18 and 42 were arrested for public violence in a protest, reportedly over ward council candidates.

Police said residents had resumed protests in the late afternoon after taking to the streets in the morning. Zwane said protesters had been demanding to see the councillor.

The group was dispersed at about 9am, but before the debris on the road could be cleared, they were back on the street, their numbers swelling to about 1 000 and hurling stones at the police barricade.

Zwane said they would monitor the situation and those arrested would appear in court on Tuesday.
