Durban - A group of families living at the Malacca Road informal settlement will have to make alternate accommodation arrangements following a fire at the settlement on Thursday morning.

Just after 10am, clouds of black smoke could be seen emanating from the settlement, situated in Durban north.

Marshall Security spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen, said no injuries were reported. He added that eThekwini Fire officials were attending to the blaze.

At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown. Local police attended the scene and would be investigating further.

The settlement was also affected by two blazes within weeks of each other in 2015.

In June 2015, at least 35 families were left homeless. The cause of the fire was unknown.

In the May fire, scores of people were left in the lurch after a fire ripped through at least 15 structures. It is thought that the fire was started from stove that was left unattended.

eThekwini Fire officials managed to contain the blaze.
