DURBAN - Five people - including a child - have been killed in a bus crash on a road between Melmoth and Empangeni.

The bus had been travelling to Empangeni from Johannesburg when it overturned, according to paramedics.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, said five people including a child were killed, while 33 others were treated at the scene. He said one of the six critically injured patients were airlifted to hospital.

McKenzie said 12 other patients were in a serious condition, while 15 suffered minor injuries

“Many patients were transported to hospital privately before paramedics arrived,” he said.

The cause of the accident remained unknown and was subject to investigation by law enforcement authorities, said McKenzie.

KZN Police are aware of the accident but police were still at the scene.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated for the deaths of the five deceased.

This is a developing story.
