Durban - A man died after the car that he was driving veered off the road and plunged into the Umgeni River on Sunday. A second person in the car sustained moderate injuries.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson said they responded to the scene around 9am. Jamieson said when they arrived, they found that the car was submerged in the water.

“The driver, a male believed to be in his 20s, had sustained major injuries and unfortunately there was nothing more than paramedics could do for him. He was declared dead at the scene,” he said.

Jamieson said a second person in the car had to be stabilised before rescue teams at the scene undertook a rescue operation to hoist the man up from the area below and on to road level.

“He was then treated by Advanced Life Support paramedics and stabilised before being rushed to a local hospital for further care,” Jamieson said.

In a separate crash in Chatsworth, a driver was killed after his car rolled.

Jamieson said when emergency teams arrived at the scene, they found that the man had sustained major injuries and had succumbed to his injuries.

The driver, in his 30s, was declared dead at the scene.

In both cases, police attended to each crash scene and are investigating further.
