Durban - Crash scene investigators are putting together the pieces of an accident on Stapleton Road on Monday night that saw a run-away truck crash into several vehicles.

The incident was captured in dramatic cellphone footage which was going viral on social media on Tuesday.

The details leading up to the crash were vague on Tuesday morning and was being investigated.

A Metro police officer who is not authorised to speak to the media said it was not clear as to how many cars were involved in the accident, and that one person was declared dead on the scene.

“It is not clear who the deceased is. The truck driver lost control of the carrier, seemed to have engaged the wrong gear and crashed to the vehicles. The truck left the road and crashed on the embankment. Not much details are available as the police are still in attendance of the scene,” said the officer.

The truck belongs to Zenith Logistics.

When contacted for comment, an unidentified man said they were aware of the accident but declined to comment.

“We are not talking or commenting on the matter at the moment,” said the man before hanging up.

KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesman, Robert McKenzie said that the truck had hit into at least four vehicles before it ploughed down an embankment.
