WATCH: Vehicles set alight in N2 protest

Durban - Just days after Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda condemned illegal protests in the province, traffic on the N2 has been affected by yet another illegal protest. 

On Thursday afternoon, at least two vehicles were set alight and others stoned during a protest on the N2 southbound just after the EB Cloete interchange. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

It is believed that residents resorted to protesting after shacks were demolished earlier in the day. 

Metro Police are advising motorists to avoid the N2 near Chesterville, ie. Between Spaghetti Junction and EB Cloete interchange due to protest action. Metro Police are on hand to disperse protestors.

On Tuesday, Kaunda held a media briefing where he revealed that provincial government has vowed to clampdown on illegal protests and put a stop to the anarchy.

According to statistics released by Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda, in the past four months there have been more than two illegal protests every day in KZN, and more than 500 in the past financial year. Most of the protests had been violent and resulted in damage to property.
