Safety and cleanliness, Durban’s number one priority

Durban - Nearly 700 Metro Police and security guards will be deployed on Durban beaches this festive season to ensure the safety of the thousands of holiday-makers expected to descend on the city.

The eThekwini Municipality and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), joined forces again on Thursday promising to roll out the red carpet for tourists.

The mayor of the eThekwini Municipality, Zandile Gumede, officials from EDTEA, the tourism department and the media were part of the entourage that was present at the unveiling of a number of interventions for the festive season for the city’s most loved destination, the beach.

Gumede took a short walk around the beachfront area, including the promenade. Starting off at California Dreaming with a parade of the new interventions which include beach buddies who are well versed on the ins and outs of the beachfront. 

She also made numerous stops along the way, talking to stall owners and the public. 

For security, together they have recruited more than 340 security personnel and 340 metro police trainees have been deployed.

While for cleanliness, they have added more cleaners and beefed up cleaning shifts.

Metro Police offices treated the media to a parade.

There was also a walkabout along the beachfront and other tourist facilities.
