Crazy Monkey delivers crazy numbers at box office

What had to be one of the most anticipated movie of the year opened with a bang. The spinoff of the MTV skits, Crazy Monkey Straight Outta Benoni, was the highest grossing film on circuit for the weekend.

Grossing R 848 804 for its first three days on the big screen, the film also earned the highest number of attendances of all films currently in cinemas for the weekend.

Crazy Monkey Straight Outta Benoni claimed the biggest opening weekend earnings for a local film this year and the second biggest opening weekend figure since Oh Shucks I'm Gatvol in March 2004.

Up against Oscar tipped Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger, and competitive family fare like Herbie Fully Loaded, Valiant and, Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Straight Outta Benoni still secured the number 1 spot at the box office attracting almost practically double the number of attendances than the number 2 performer, Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D did.

Not surprisingly, the “East Rand” showed the highest support for the film, with the best performing cinema being Ster-Kinekor's East Rand Mall.

Producer Ronnie Apteker comments: "The boys from Benoni are thrilled with the opening weekend numbers and all indications are that the monkey is being embraced by young and old."

Other local fare currently on circuit includes Tim Greene's A Boy Called Twist which secured the number 6 position on the Cinema Nouveau Top 10 this past weekend. Two new, Local films hits cinemas next week - Norman Maake's, Soldiers of the Rock hits the big screen, and the bread animation short, And there in the Dust which is playing in front of with Sin City.
