TWO POPULAR stars from the much-loved Generations soapie made appearances at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Maggie Benedict, who plays the role of Akhona on the show, was caught for allegedly stealing Panado headache tablets costing R17.90 at Checkers in Cresta Mall on December 18.

A case of shoplifting was opened and she was taken to the Linden police station holding cells but later released.

On Thursday, Benedict and her lawyer Kaiser Jonathan arrived at the court, but left shortly after to view footage of the alleged shoplifting.

When they returned, Jonathan told the court that the defence still needed to prepare their presentations.

“Given the value of the alleged crime, it is better not to proceed, both for the State and for us,” he said.

Jonathan said the purpose of their visit to court yesterday was to view the evidence and to decide whether the matter should go to trial.

The footage only showed Benedict leaving the shop premises. Jonathan said he found the evidence to be circumstantial.

“We’ll consider our options and make a formal decision,” he said. The case was postponed to February 27.

Benedict’s former colleague Melusi Yeni, who played Phenyo in the soapie, was also at the Randburg court. He appeared in a maintenance case, where he denied fathering a baby girl. Yeni has requested DNA evidence. - The Star
