South African band Freshly Ground has been denied entry into Zimbabwe, the country's Southern Eye newspaper reported on its website on Monday.

The band was turned away at Harare International Airport on Sunday soon after their flight from Johannesburg had landed.

No reasons were given, the newspaper reported.

They were due to stage the closing performance at the Harare International Festival of the Arts.

In 2010 the group was banned from staging a show in Harare, days after releasing their ‘Chicken to Change’ video which mocked Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe for staying in power. He became head of government in 1980.

The song urged Mugabe to “become the hero he used to be” by stepping down. - Sapa
