London - Justin Bieber has been charged with dangerous driving and assault.

The 20-year-old singer, who was recently placed on two years probation for egging his former neighbour's house in Calabasas, California, was arrested near Stratford, Ontario in Canada, on Friday after crashing his ATV into a paparazzo's minivan while enjoying a "peaceful" date with Selena Gomez, 22, near his father's home.

Law enforcement sources told The Toronto Star newspaper that there was "a physical altercation" between the 'Baby' hitmaker and the photographer after the collision.

Justin, who was released shortly after his arrest, was subsequently charged and is scheduled to appear in court on September 29.

If convicted, the star could be jailed for violating his probation.

The singer's lawyer, Brian H. Greenspan, released a statement on Tuesday, saying: "Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez' peaceful retreat in Stratford this weekend was unfortunately disrupted by the unwelcome presence of paparazzi.

"This has regrettably resulted in charges of dangerous driving and assault. Mr. Bieber and Ms. Gomez have fully cooperated in the police investigation. We are hopefully that this matter will be quickly resolved."

Last week, Justin compared himself to Princess Diana after being involved in a minor car accident with another photographer in Los Angeles and called for new laws to protect him from suffering the same fate as the late Princess of Wales, who died in a crash in Paris in 1997.

He wrote on Twitter: "There should be laws against what I just experienced. We should have learned from the death of Princess Diana... I don't have a problem with Paparazzi but when they act recklessly they put us all in danger."

The 'Heartbreaker' singer has been accused of driving dangerously several times in the past, and was issued a stern warning by police officers in Beverly Hills last month, who blasted him for "putting other people's safety in jeopardy" after he was captured on video illegally driving a three-wheeled motorcycle on the sidewalk to avoid traffic. - BANG Showbiz
