I must be utterly honest, I’m a huge fan of both, actress Priyanka Chopra and singer Nick Jonas separately. They both slay in their respective fields of work and hold enough star power that millions of people worldwide bow to - so together they make the ultimate power couple.
And some may not realise it, but this union is an important one. It triumphs power, age and race.
Last month, the two formalised their relationship in India with a Roka ceremony ending months of speculation on whether they were dating or not. The party was attended by their closest friends and family and pictures posted on social media sent fans into a frenzy. Even those who didn’t know what a Roka ceremony was to begin with - suddenly jumped on the train.
Chopra’s claim to fame came when she won the Miss World pageant in 2000. She then went on to dominate Bollywood cinema and soon after starred in ABC’s Quantico as the character Alex Parris, making Chopra the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series.
She was also named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2016 and Forbes listed her among the World's 100 Most Powerful Women in 2017.
Jonas made a name for himself after a few failed attempts. Together with his brothers, Joe and Kevin, they starred on Disney Channel’s Jonas Brothers and movies such as "Camp Rock" and its sequel "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam". Jonas eventually broke away from the kids' channel and the band to focus on his music as a solo artist.
He was featured on OK!'s list of 2014's Sexiest Men Alive and was ranked number ten on People's Sexiest Men Alive list in 2015. He also ranked 6th on Capital FM's list of Sexiest Men in Pop during 2016.
Having said all this, it is no wonder Chopra and Jonas are the talk of the town. And will remain the talk until something bigger decides to show up. It doesn’t mean we have to like it - we just need to accept that this is one of those important moments that will go down in the entertainment history books.
When I found out that the two are rumoured to be dating because they were spotted on outings together and was seen at the Met Gala. It irked me.
All sorts of things went through my mind. She’s so beautiful. She’s ten years older than him. She’s Indian. Even the fact that she was taller than him when she wore heels bugged me. Eventually, I resorted to the fact that it could be a publicity stunt - well that was right up until the Roka happened.
Fast forward a few months later and I’ve learnt that these two are head over heels for each other. This union is important. They are 2018’s power couple. Some may equate them to Victoria and David Beckham, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (When they were still together) or Megan and Prince Harry - each very successful on their own, yet even better when together.
This relationship also shows us that two people from completely different backgrounds and faiths can be together, while still appreciating and respecting each others beliefs. They make the world a little happier, and finally, we learn that “age ain’t nothing but a number”.
