Comedy sensation Trevor Noah was voted the “act most likely to make a million quid” at the Edinburgh Festival this week.
Now based in Los Angeles, Noah remains a uniquely South African creation, mining his mixed-race upbringing and many other Mzansi quirks for maximum laughs in his new show, 'That’s Racist'.
His set, described as an “impressive fringe debut from a classy young comic” by UK newspaper The Guardian, won the uniquely named Malcolm Hardee “Act Most Likely to Make a Million Quid” Award.
“5am in Edinburgh. I'm celebrating winning the Malcolm Hardee Award. Good times with loyiso gola and mojak lehoko (sic),” said Noah on his Facebook page.
Noah will bring ‘That's Racist’ to South Africa for a 42-date national tour which kicks off at Pretoria's Brooklyn Theatre on September 9 and ends at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on October 27.
Meanwhile, another South African also raked in the plaudits at Edinburgh. Playwright Yael Farber, now based in Canada won three awards for her adaptation of the 124-year-old August Strindberg play ‘Miss Julie’.
Farber’s version won rave reviews from the gathered critics, and centres on the complex relationship between a farm worker, the farmer’s daughter and the woman who raised both of them.
The play premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year and will run at the State Theatre in Pretoria from September 5. - IOL
