Think Disney and Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Mulan, The Lion King and Pinocchio probably all spring to mind – vividly.
There’s also the fabulous fish from Finding Nemo, the super heroes from The Incredibles and all the amazing toys from Toy Story, who will all be part of the ice spectacular Disney on Ice that opens at the Coca-Cola Dome in Joburg on July 11 and runs until Sunday, July 20. They then move to Cape Town’s Grand West Arena for 11 shows only, from Wednesday, July 23 to Sunday, July 27.
It’s a celebration of 100 years of Disney magic with all the much loved characters involved which will surely transport both kids and parents alike into the wonderful enchanting world of Disney, according to Tony Feldman of Showtime Manage- ment, who in association with DSTV are producing the show locally. Tickets are on sale now at Computicket and they’ve cleverly managed to secure the show for the July school holidays. No more scratching heads about what to do.
Disney on Ice promises enter- tainment for both young and old. This is a once-in-a-lifetime skating extravaganza that brings together the legacy of Disney in the tradition of their amazing ice shows.
Most of your favourite movies will be represented including Beauty and the Beast, which is a special local favourite following the musical a few years ago. But the loudest cheers will be saved for anything and anyone from The Lion King.
It’s not only the characters that will steal hearts. The success of these shows has much to do with the familiarity. Very few of the tunes in the show will not be recognised and having the audience sing along to memorable tunes such as When you wish upon a star from Pinocchio; A whole new world from Aladdin; Can you feel the love tonight? and Hakuna Matata from The Lion King and You’ve got a friend in me from Toy Story is delightful.
Mickey and Minnie will be leading the fun choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Sarah Kawahara who has previously worked with Michelle Kwan and choreographed the skating segment for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Broadway veteran and scenic designer David Potts, creates a world of splendour for the skaters and audiences to explore which all enhances the experience.
