Venice, Italy - Johnny Depp has dug deep and come up with 10 million euros (about R97 million) to buy a palace on Venice's famed Grand Canal, a newspaper reported on Saturday.
The Hollywood heartthrob apparently fell in love with the Palazzo Dona Sangiantoffetti when he spent time in the lagoon city last year during filming for the comedy-thriller, The Tourist.
Depp outbid an “Arab prince” who was also interested in the 17th century palace, Venice-based daily La Nuova Venezia said citing, estate agent Alessandro Proto Consulting which is handling the deal.
Overlooking the Grand Canal - Venice's main waterway - the building covers an area of some 680 square metres and boasts finely decorated high ceilings, La Nuova Venezia said.
The newspaper noted how Angelina Jolie - Depp's co-star in The Tourist - has also fallen for the charms of Italy's northeastern Veneto region, albeit in a more rural setting.
Last year Jolie and partner Brad Pitt boughtthe Villa Constanza estate, situated in the wine-making area of Valpolicella some 100
kilometres from Venice, for a reported 32 million euros. - Sapa-dpa
