Comedian Trevor Gumbi's 'Sober Companion' will debut on SABC, Monday July 4 at 9 pm.

The drama series is Gumbi Productions's first and it was one of the shows listed as part of the public broadcaster's new local content drive in July.

The Sober Companion is based, in part, on Trevor's own experience during a 12-week recovery program for cocaine addiction. It’s star studded cast includes former Isidingo actor Brendan Auret, actor and musician Kabomo Vilakazi, and South Africa's “prince of theatre” Atandwa Kani.

The comedian leads the pack and the co-creator - actress Tiffany Barbuzano - also makes an appearance in the series.

Gumbi started using cocaine in 2000 and after a long battle with addiction, is now living a clean life. He has talked openly about his struggle in the past.

During an interview with Vuzu in 2015 he said, “I can enjoy my kids. My mind is clearer, I can remember things and damn, it's awesome, man”.

He credits comedy and his family with helping him overcome his addiction.

According to Zalebs, the show is likely to hit home for a lot of viewers, as drug addiction is a major problem in South Africa, with the country being a major consumer market for heroin - this is according to a 2014 UN report.
