The Goliath’s Comedy Club in Melrose Arch was booming with laughter on Thursday night during the Comedy Central Cares comedy benefit.

The show was hosted in partnership with Orange Babies and Rockstart with the aim to raise funds for underprivileged children and youth in South Africa.

The charity auction was a huge success with R450 000 raised for charity. The auctioned items included the tie worn by Trevor Noah on his The Daily Show debut, which was sold to an online bidder for R27 000.

Other items included a signed photograph of Lionel Messi, which sold at R10 000.

Four nights' accommodation for two people at the Tau Private Game Reserve closed at R50 000.

An hour in the studio live with Darren Simpson and the gang from the 94.7 Breakfast Express, a custom-made Marianne Fassler dress, a corporate gig by Goliath & Goliath and a shopping and personal styling experience with the fashion editor at Zando also went under the hammer.

Evert van der Veer the Vice President, Comedy Central Africa said their initiative is aimed at educating HIV positive pregnant women and facilitates access to medication.

“We really appreciate all those who were involved in making Comedy Central Cares such a success, and who gave of their time for free. These wonderful comedians didn’t only make the audience laugh – they will also bring smiles to the faces of the children who will benefit from this.”

The show included stand-up sets from top South African comics including Joey Rasdien, Skhumba, Snooze, Eugene Khoza and Donovan, Jason and Nicholas Goliath. Mo Magic performed a magic trick while South Africa’s Got Talent Isabella Jane staged an amazing singing ventriloquism routine.

The funds raised will go to Comedy Central's nominated charities, Rockstart and Orange Babies.
