One of SA’s top actors and film producers, Zack du Plessis, acclaimed for roles in popular television series Vetkoek Paleis and Orkney Snork Nie, has died.

While the cause of his death was not yet known yesterday, Du Plessis had been receiving medical treatment for a lung disease when he died in his sleep at his Pretoria home on Wednesday.

He played a key role in the Afrikaans medium Orkney Snork Nie depicting the daily lives and affairs of the Van Tonder family. Based on the mining town of Orkney in North West the show, which had been broadcast for three years on SABC from 1989, attempted to illustrate that something was always happening in the town.

With Willie Esterhuizen, another well-known actor and comedian, Du Plessis played a shop owner in the series Vetkoek Paleis – another show that had viewers in stitches.

Du Plessis was also famous for his roles in the show Maak ’n Las and the movies Bosveld Hotel and Mr Bones.

He is survived by his wife Magda van Biljon and their two children. - Pretoria News
