London - Workplace bullying is increasing with many victims too afraid to speak up, according to a study by conciliation service Acas.

Some callers to a helpline at Acas even considered suicide, with the line receiving about 20 000 calls on bullying, harassment and violence in the last year.

Victims can dread going to work and it can affect home life.

Acas thinks bullying costs the economy £18-billion in lost days at work.

In a separate survey of 1 700 staff, the TUC said almost a third were bullied at work, with women more likely to be victims and 40 to 59-year-olds the most bullied. More than one in three people quit after being bullied.
