London - Avoid wearing nail varnish in hospital - but if you have to, opt for red.

A new study suggests wearing polish may interfere with the equipment that monitors the amount of oxygen in the blood.

This device is called a pulse oximeter, and clips on to the end of the finger like a clothes peg.

In a study at Celebi University, Turkey, researchers used the device on volunteers wearing a range of nail colours: dark red, yellow, dark blue, green, purple, brown, white, metallic, black and pink.

The team then took readings from the volunteers without nail varnish. All colours apart from red had a significant effect on the oxygen readings.

The team are unsure why red didn’t affect the measurements.- Daily Mail
