Joan Rivers remains in a “serious” condition in a New York City hospital.

The 'Fashion Police' host, who was placed in a medically-induced coma after she went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing during minor throat surgery on Thursday (28.08.14), is “receiving the best treatment and possible care,” according to her daughter, Melissa Rivers.

The TV producer told E! News: “Her condition remains serious but she is receiving the best treatment and care possible.

“We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery.”

The family have been inundated with messages of support since news of the 81-year-old comedienne's health scare emerged.

And Melissa, 46, said: “My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world.”

Joan appeared in “good spirits” the night before the surgery when she cracked jokes about death during a performance at Laurie Beechman Theatre on Wednesday night (27.08.14).

She told the audience: “I'm 81 - I could go at any moment. I could fall over right here and you all could say, 'I was there!' “
