While the world mourns the passing of the political icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela take at a glimpse at her portrayal in movies and TV series over the years.

Madikizela-Mandela died on April 2 at the age of 81, in a Johannesburg hospital, after suffering from a long illness and was surrounded by family and loved ones. 

We may have lost one of the most powerful women in politics, but her legacy lives on not only in her work post-1994 but in film and TV.

Here are the 5 times Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was portrayed in films and TV series.

Winnie Mandela (2011)

The film suffered from mixed reviews and Madikizela-Mandela herself voiced her displeasure with the film. The political stalwart did make it clear that while she disapproves of the film she has nothing against the Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson for portraying her in the film. 

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)

Starring Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris was given the opportunity to play Mam Winnie where the film chronicles Mandela's life from his childhood to being inaugurated as the first democratic president. 

Madiba (2017)

The latest portrayal of Madikizela-Mandela comes courtesy of South African actress Terry Pheto. The three-part miniseries looks at Mandela's life and in a rare occurrence, Mam Winnie is portrayed by a South African actress. 

Mrs Mandela (2010)

In the BBC series, London-born actress Sophie Okonedo played Madikizela-Mandela to mostly positive reviews.

Winnie (2017)

The first documentary to give a look into Madikizela-Mandela's life through the struggle finds the Sun Dance award-winning documentary takes an in-depth look at the most misunderstood and intriguingly powerful contemporary female political figures.
