‘American Hustle’ leads Oscar nominees

Los Angeles - 'American Hustle' and '12 Years a Slave' lead this year's Academy Award nominations.

David O. Russell's crime caper starring Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence has scored seven nominations at this year's Oscars, including Best Picture and acting nominations for Christian, Jennifer, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper.

The movie is also nominated for Best Director for David and Best Original Screenplay.

Steve McQueen's harrowing slavery drama is up for six awards including Best Picture, while leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor will compete for Best Actor. Co-stars Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o have earned nominations in the Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress fields, respectively. The film is also nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

There are nine Best Picture nominations in total this year, with the breathtaking space saga 'Gravity' also making the cut alongside 'Captain Phillips', 'Nebraska', 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Dallas Buyers Club'.

Golden Globe Award winners Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett continue to rack up award nominations as they are up for Best Actor and Best Actress for 'Dallas Buyers Club' and 'Blue Jasmine', respectively.

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep earns a record 18th Oscar nomination for 'August: Osage County' and her co-star Julia Roberts, who is also a past Best Actress winner, is up for Best Supporting Actress.

The nominations were announced in Los Angeles today by 'Thor: The Dark World' actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
