Los Angeles - A Harry Potter spin-off originally destined to be a piece of memorabilia for author J K Rowling's kids is to be made into a blockbuster Hollywood trilogy, according to a report in The New York Times.

The new films will be based on ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, a supposed textbook used by schoolboy wizard Harry Potter at Hogwarts and written by a character named by Newt Scamander.

The narrative is set to begin in New York about seven decades prior to the start of the Harry Potter series.

Warner Bros announced in September that the book would be filmed.

Now the plan is to make three “megamovies” scripted by Rowling herself, according to the report, which was a profile of Warner Bros chief executive Kevin Tsujihara. “When I say he made 'Fantastic Beasts' happen, it isn't PR-speak but the literal truth,” Rowling said.

“We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call, and then I got out the rough draft that I'd thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids, and started rewriting!” - Sapa-dpa
