After months of delays, superstar Rajinikanth’s Tamil period-drama, Kochadaiiyaan, is slated for a worldwide release on April 11. reports…

DIRECTOR Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin views Kochadaiiyaan as the “next step in Indian cinema”.

In an interview with she said: “Following last year’s celebrations of India’s film-making centenary, we view the release of Kochadaiiyaan as part of the next step of Indian cinema. For the first time a full-length feature has been made using performance-capture technology in India and I truly hope this creates a whole alternative film-making avenue apart from live action films.”

Kochadaiiyaan features the visual mastery of photo-realistic performance-capture technology (capturing complex movement and realistic physicality) for the first time in the history of Indian film.

The film is an epic dramati- sation of good versus evil starring Rajinikanth, who is Soundarya’s father, in a dual role.

Also starring is Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone together with South India’s leading stars R Sarath Kumar, Nasser, Aadi Pinisetty, Shobana and Rukmini.

Kochadaiiyaan is jointly produced by Eros International Media Ltd and Mediaone Global Entertainment Ltd.

“We are confident that this will be a landmark film in world cinema as a result of the groundbreaking technology used.

“The film will be released in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Bengali and Punjabi in India and overseas in more than 6 000 cinemas. We will be releasing an English version internationally as well,” said Sunil Lulla, the managing director of Eros International Media Ltd.

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has composed the music for the film, which runs along the lines of Hollywood films such as Tin Tin and Avatar. Eros International and Mediaone have also teamed up with Karbonn Mobile to launch a million Kochadaiiyaan-branded cellphones to celebrate the release of the film. These are the exclusive Karbonn Kochadaiiyaan cellphones.

Kochadaaiyaan is based on the pandiyan king Kochadaiyan Ranadhiran (710-735 AD).

On Rajinikanth’s character’s look, the director said. “First, we scanned his face and made a 3D model to get his exact features, such as the scar on his nose. And then we corrected the 3D model by tightening his skin to make him look 25 years younger.

“The same technology was used in the film Tron. The youthfulness of the look was compared to the look Rajinikanth carried in his film Muthu.”

Director Soundarya confirmed that K Ravikumar had worked with her father and herself on the movie’s script.

Since Kochadaaiyaan was shot using performance-capture technology, 48 cameras were required to shoot each scene. These cameras captured the performances of the actors from 48 angles. –
