Adding to the reputation of the capital of electronic music, the second annual Cape Town Electronic Music Festival (CTEMF) will take place at the V&A Waterfront Breakwater parking lot from Friday to Sunday.

The line-up features top DJs and producers with the headline act being English-Canadian DJ, Richie Hawtin.

This is Hawtin’s first time in South Africa as a DJ. He is recognised as the top techno DJ since he started on the decks in the early Nineties.

Black Coffee will join him as a headline attraction and is a South African enjoying huge success on the global house front. Other attractions are Anthea, Haezer, Ready D featuring Youngsta, Killer Robot, Crazy White Boy and G-Force.

Said organiser, Duncan Ringrose: “The festival is an umbrella concept. I have tried to be as inclusive as possible. We have the basic genres which include house, techno and drum ’n’ bass.”

The fest organisers, who expect more than 2 000 people to attend, said the event will start at 3pm on Friday with the doors opening at noon on Saturday and Sunday.

One of last year’s highlights was Goldfish, who moved away from their commercial sets to a more club set.

“CTEMF gave Goldfish a chance to play more underground stuff and with some of the DJs, like Crazy White Boy, we give them a chance to play what’s less commercially viable.”

In addition to the event are the workshops which began yesterday at the Red Bull Studios in the city centre.

Tomorrow Hawtin joins Black Coffee for a series of electronic music workshops and master classes in a run of socially conscious events. Called Bridges for Music, they aim to increase opportunities through music and “create positive change in dis-advantaged areas across the world”.

The workshops will be held in Langa and at the Red Bull Studios.
