GIG OF THE WEEK:

Mad City Block Party/Kendrick Lamar

Mary Fitzgerald Square and Johannesburg Stadium (Tomorrow

SATURDAY is sure to go down as the day we partied from Saturday to Monday. While it is probably a nightmare for promoters to have two US outfits come to the country independently to perform on the same day, music lovers are spoilt for choice.

The first event, the Omelca Tequila Mad City Block Party, is to take place in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown from 4pm. The gig sees the dynamic American DJ project, Major Lazer, performing in South Africa for the first time.

The project is well known for it’s incredible production skills

on contemporary dancehall tunes. They are part of the team that worked with Snoop Lion on his reggae-influenced album, Reincarnation. Tickets: from R275.

Nearby in Jozi, hip hop prince Kendrick Lamar will perform for the first time on the continent. After being nominated for seven Grammys last year you know Lamar’s album, good kid, M.A.A.D city will go down as a classic.

From the hit songs B*tch Don’t Kill My Vibe to Swimming Pools (Drank), there is no limit to the material the rapper will perform.

If he decides to do some of his collaborations we will be in for a treat because he has worked with everyone from Emeli Sande and Dido to A$AP Rocky and Dr Dre. All we need is enough time to enjoy his set.

Local acts that will join him include Khuli Chana and Reason.

The gig goes down at the Johnannesburg Stadium (41 Upper Ross Road, New Doornfontein). Tickets: R350 to R1 900. The show starts at 7pm. For more info call
