GIG OF THE WEEK

Matthew Mole

Cafe Barcelona (Thursday)

Matthew Mole will go down in history as the first South African to enter iTunes at No 1 with his debut album. The list has seen the likes of Jay-Z and Robin Thicke, but at the time Mole released The Home That We Built, South Africa was more interested in him than anyone else.

The man may not have listened to pop until he was into his teens, but he picked up the guitar at age 11 and it explains why he is so good at what he does. He put in the

10 000 hours’ practice which are required to perfect any talent. When he released the album, he knew it would be a success because he had held on to it for two years. It was a case of perfecting his craft and it was ready. Like most good artists, Mole does not want to be boxed into one category but admits that his music is mainly folk with some electronic influences.

In a time when hip hop, pop and house music all seem to be dominating, it takes real talent to make a name outside these genres. He admits that he is influenced by the likes of Mumford & Sons so you know what to expect.

Playing at Cafe Barcelona (shop 24, Elardus Park Centre, cnr Delmas Rd and Barnard St, Elardus Park, Pretoria) on Thursday, Mole will start off your year on a mellow note and you will get to understand the hype around the artist.

• R150 to get in. Gig starts at 8pm. Call 012 345 3602.
