GIG OF THE WEEK

Channel o and vuzu youth day celebrations

Chaf Pozi, Soweto,

(Sunday)

It seems like yesterday that last year’s Channel O and Vuzu’s Youth Day celebrations took place.

But that’s just how fast time

flies because come Sunday we’ll

be heading back to Chaf Pozi in Soweto for this year’s blast.

If you have ever been to any party hosted by DStv, especially Channel O and Vuzu, then you know it will be a great event.

Since they are all about

being “young, gifted and black”,

it is only right that the channels host a party to commemorate the June 16 holiday.

The line-up is split between rapper/singers and DJs. On the rap stage you will have man of the moment, Khuli Chana (pictured), who is what AKA was a year ago.

The young Motswako rapper

is on fire with his great sound

that is currently unmatched.

He will obviously kill his set with his classic tracks, but will likely close with the hit track

Tswa Daar.

Teargas will also make an appearance and as veterans,

there is really nothing more

to stay about them. Their sing-song kind of hip hop always gets the fans singing along and that is a good thing.

One thing, though, Nkukza has been scarce of late as only KO and Ma-E seem to pitch up for gigs.

Here is hoping that he pops up for this one as it is never the same when one band member is missing.

Then there is Reason, whose lyrics are just amazing. His craftsmanship makes you think you have heard his song before when it’s actually the first time.

It is the lyricism and arrangement of the beats that make his material infectious.

Then there is Donald, the man who owned last year. With a fresh BET nomination for the upcoming awards, the singer will show us why, even in the US, people think he is one of Africa’s finest.

The DJ roster includes Fresh, who rarely comes out to events like this so it will be an honour to have him on the decks.

His buddy Euphonik will also be there, so that should be interesting. Dimplez and Andy X will take the stage with some very interesting mixes.

That said, most dudes will pay

a lot of attention once it is Ms Cosmo’s turn on the decks, as she brings more than just the music.

• The show starts at 1pm and it costs R80 to get in. Chaf Pozi is at corner Kingsley Sithole and Nicholas streets, Orlando Towers, Soweto.
